My not so new rig and new antenna setup.

Salam to all readers...

Last week got my self another 1 2nd hand (condition like new) mobile rig for my base setup. At first it was intended to replace my current running rig. I thought my rig kaput already bcoz it cannot transmit on low n midlow power output. If i do so it will "Hang" like a pc which u can do anything on it. After turn it off n turn it on back then it can be use. All this while i thought i was my rig is faulty. Previously i did ask few elmers bout this. They said this is the first time they heard bout it. Then i thought it was my own modded pc power supply that causing it. Then i get myself a modded by a fren PC power supply. The problem occuring. It give me a headache. Later i bought a power supply from HS Land by the Brand Hammax and change the coax. Still got problem.

So i thought my rig is faulty n got a 2nd mobile rig. After change the rig... The problem still persist. Then i make up my mind, there is somthing wrong with the antenna. then i saw an old broom stick made from soft steel pipe. tried to bend it to make it 90° at both end. At 1 end going upward and on the other end going downward. (pic will come later). This boom will be a temporary boom. I'm getting a proper steel pipe (exhaust pipe) to make the permanent boom. Later i will joint it with a satellite dish stand to make it swingable. As for the temporary setup, now i can transmit at low power n midlow power output. now can even monitor station qso from Sungai Petani which is previously can even hear anything. I haven't fully tested the new setup. I just worked a few station on simplex with Low Power. 1 from bayan baru (5 2), 1 from permatang Binjai (5 9) n 1 Mobile station at Permatang Pauh (5 9).

Today Is My Birthday...

Today is my birthday. Today i turn 30 already. Just like any other birthday... it just a normal day. Life must go on. A lots of thing has happen to me all this 30 years. Lots of thing that i need to do to fulfill my dreams. Today I'm happy with my life. i got a wife, a son n a soon to be son / daughter. my beloved wife now pregnant almost 3 month. Hopefully she will deliver a baby girl. However a boy or a girl.. it does not matter.. I'm thanksfull for another child. My son already 2yr++ n by this October he will be 3 yr.

This year i'm celebrating my birthday wif new hobby. Well actually i've been intersted wif this radio quite somtime already... but only this year i started to get myself into Amatuer Radio seriusly. However still alot that i need to learn about Amatuer Radio eventhough i've got my ticket to "Fly on the Frequencies"...

Next.. i want complete my radio shack with all that is needed as a HAM. now i only got a mobile VHF transciever, 2 handy talkie. Which is 1 use in my jelopy. while my mobile rig use at home base. Looking forward to get a HF set to further explore the band that is permitted on my B class licence n to listen to all other HF band available.

1 day i will upgrade my 9W to 9M... however it is along way to go and soon it will be...

Ham Radio Obsolete?

`Recently, on an Internet news group, someone posted an article contending that the Internet and online computer services such as Compuserve and Ameria On Line will soon kill off amateur radio. This came within a month of a newspaper wire-service story recounting the use of electronic mail in getting messages into the earthquake-ravaged city of Kobe, Japan. This newspaper story quoted someone who said, essentially, that e-mail was the modern means of disaster communications, replacing ham radio "of the old days."

No one making these claims is a ham. Anyone who contends that using a commercial online computer service rivals the excitement of amateur radio communications obviously has no experience with our hobby. Still, others similarly unfamiliar with the amateur radio service might give some credence to such claims. That makes it worthwhile to point out some of the reasons why they're wrong.

The Internet article said that the world-wide communications capability of the online services and their ability to retrieve vast amounts of information render amateur radio obsolete. This contention overlooks the principal difference between such services and amateur radio. When using an online service or the Internet, you are a consumer; when using amateur radio, you are a participant.

A couple of weeks ago, I worked stations in Europe, South America, Africa and Asia. I was using a 5-watt transmitter and a wire antenna. That was enjoyable, rewarding and satisfying. Now, I could have sent e-mail to most of those countries, looked at World Wide Web pages from many of them, or picked up the telephone and talked to someone in each of them. As any ham knows, that just wouldn't be the same thing. As long as people find it exciting to do such things with equipment in their own homes, without the benefit of untold thousands of technicians maintaining their network links, amateur radio will have a place as a rewarding pastime.

Any non-amateur who cannot understand the difference between amateur radio and use of commerical communication services should find a local ham and ask to sit in while the ham makes some contacts, perhaps on HF, VHF weak-signal, or via amateur satellites. I'm sure that few people will go away from such an experience without knowing the difference. If you know any non-amateurs who think ham radio is obsolete, offer to give them a demonstration....

RAE...

Today is RAE day. This time it is held at USM Transkiran, Nibong Tebal. To all Frens that taking it.. i wish u all good luck. It has been almost +/-6 month since i took it in November 2007. I got my Apparatus Assignment in March after a long wait for the result which came out abit late. But that already passed. So this time hopefully the result will come out early. hi hi hi.

So got nothing much to say here. Lately been bz with saltmining task. Will come back n posting more soon.. there has been a few things happen, new project regarding my radio coming soon. I will post it up after everything is ready n succesful. So watch out for it... HI HI HI...

Just another post...

Hi all.. its been awhile i haven't post anything. It all due my busyness... its also due to no connection to the internet at home. However even though busy wif work n life.. i did spent some time to joint some activity regarding amateur radio. 1 of it is the Emergency Communication Drill organized by MARTS Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services (R.A.C.E.S.) The training involving the drill on communication during disaster. It is something new to me. there i learn a lot. This including how can we assist in the emergency situation, what equipment do we need, how to set up a station, how to communicate with other station during emergency or disaster.

On that day, at first we check what equipment does we have. everyone brought their equipment and share it in order to make the communication with Amatuer Radio is possible. this including bringing the antenna, poles, mobile rig, handy talkie, cables, connector, etc..etc.. Then get ourself into group n the set up station in certain areas. Then we start to sent messages, relay messages from other station.

The training is good for us amatuer radio operator. Amatuer radio is not just to ragchew n talk with other. We can put it into a good use to mankind. I will put up the pic during that day. It was a fun activity. I'm looking forward to join more of this kind of activity. thanks for reading...

New gadget for my Hobby..

Recently i got myself a new handy talkie. It's a Yaesu Ft-60R. I at first i want to get a dual band moblie rig. I already got my budget but then need to use the $$ to pay my road tax. So i got myself the dual band handy. Hi..hi..hi... so i'm getting used to it.. so any comment n review will be post after i used to it. So anyone wanna make comment for this handy pls do so. We can share our xperiance n knowledge.

As for yesterday i did qso with 2-3 station on the UHF repeater that is 9M2RPP. Just using my handy i can trigger the repeater (i was in a jelopy driven by my fren). However i forgot to ask for the audio report. next time i got chance sure i'll ask for the RST.

So to me it is a good handy as for now. i've still need to exlpore more on handy. Setting up the handy is not so hard. Just read the manual u should be able to nput the frequencies or setup the handy for simplex use or repeater use. Ok thats all for now. More review coming after this...

Coaxial Cabling Terms

While i was browsing for some info to do my work. I google somethings for my hobby too.. hi... hi... hi... this is somethings good for a beginner like me to understand more bout this hobby. Coaxial is important for this hobby so here a little info bout it. source from the link in at the bottom. There are more info at that site.

• What is Coaxial Cabling?
  Coaxial cable is a two conductor electrical cable consisting of a center conductor and an outer conductor with an insulating spacer between the two.
  
  
• How is Coaxial Cabling used?
  Primarily, coaxial cables are used for the transmission of Radio Frequency energy. The system offers tight control over electrical impedance. This yields excellent performance at high frequencies and superior EMI control/shielding.
  
  
• Where is Coaxial Cabling used?
  A broad range of applications exist for coaxial cabling. The two primary impedance values of 50 and 75 Ohms determine specific applications with 50 Ohms primarily used in data signal applications and 75 Ohms used in video signal applications.

Terms regarding coaxial usage.

Attenuation (Insertion Loss): Loss of power. Attenuation is usually measured in dB loss per length of cable (ex. 31.0 dB/100Ft.). Attenuation increases as frequency increases.

BALUN: An acronym for BALanced/UNbalanced. A device commonly used to change one cabling media to another (ex. coaxial to twisted pair balun).

Center Conductor: The solid or stranded wire in the middle of the coaxial cable. The conductor diameter is measured by the American Wire Gauge (AWG).

Coaxial Adaptor: A device used to change one connector type to another or one gender to another (ex. BNC to SMA Adaptor).

Coaxial Cable: A two conductor cylindrical transmission line typically comprised of a center conductor, an insulating dielectric material and an outer conductor (shielding). Coaxial cable can be flexible (typical of L-com assemblies), semi-rigid or rigid in nature.

Coaxial Connector: The interconnection device found at each end of a coaxial cable assembly. There are many common types of coaxial connectors such as: BNC, SMA, SMB, F, etc.

Dielectric: The insulating material that separates the center conductor and the shielding.

Electromagnetic Interference (EMI): Electrical or electro-magnetic energy that disrupts electrical signals.

Frequency: The number of times a periodic action occurs in one second. Measured in Hertz.

Impedance: The opposition to the flow of alternating or varying current. Measured in Ohms. Two common impedance values are 50 Ohms used primarily for data and 75 Ohms used to transmit video signals.

Jack: The female connector usually containing a center socket.

Plug: The male connector usually containing a center pin.

RF (Radio Frequency): A frequency band from 3 MHz to 3 GHz. Primarily used for transmission of radio and television signals.

RG/U: Symbols used to represent coaxial cable that is built to U.S. government specifications (R=Radio Frequency, G=Government, U=Universal Specification)

Shielding: Conductive envelope made of wires or metal foil that covers the dielectric and the center conductor

Twinaxial: An offshoot from coaxial cabling. Two center conductors with one dielectric and braided shielding.

VSWR (Voltage Standing Wave Ratio): The ratio of the maximum effective voltage to the minimum effective voltage measured along a RF transmission line. This value generally increases with frequency and higher values are not desirable.

Its been awhile i have not blog anything. Been bz with work and life. However did spent some time to add some functionality to my blog. I've been playing with html coding with reference to few website. I've tried to use raw html coding but failed to function. Hi hi hi hi... then i stumble to the widget creator from www.widgetbox.com So i tried to create a widget wif some coding that i extracted.
